What is Plural?
The major aim of this blog is to offer a virtual space of expression to every individual who adopt and is willing to cultivate and valorize:
an atheist1 or agnostic2 worldview, and for that reason reject every religion, and any kind of superstition, magic, irrational spirituality.
an analytical3 and naturalistic4 perspective for philosophical thinking, one marked by logical exactness, linguistic clarity, attention and awareness of methods and results of scientific research, in every field where this is practised.
a vision of knowledge based on scientific method5, considered as the only valid way to explore, describe, explain and understand rationally Nature; in general, the thought upon wich scientific method is based, tough this doesn’t imply rejecting a critical evaluation of the correctness of each single method, of each single technological application or of the role of science in the social-economical context.
the taste for creativity, experimentation, original and unbiased (but rigorous) inquiry, in every field (artistic, scientific, philosophical, politic), the bringing into question of dogmas, picked up certainties and taboos, and are particularly attentive to emerging themes and multidisciplinary approaches.
an ethical perspective that recognise being sentient as the fundamental feature that define the belonging of a biological organism to the world of moral subject (antispeciesism6) and reject any kind of discrimination for reason of gender, sexual taste, human population of origin, philosophical or political orientation, level of education or social class.
a eudaimonistic7 ethical perspective, whose aim is the happiness of the individual, the emancipation from the natural and social ties that make happiness impossible, freedom of choice, the freedom to enjoy the pleasures of body, culture, the free interaction with the others individuals (tough respecting the equivalent freedom of others), and the freedom to widen indefinitly fields and ways of enjoyment, when that doesn’t imply negative consequences for the other individuals (and the ecosystem).
in general, a moral attitude marked by empathy8, solidarity, compassion towards all sentient beings, by sensitivity and concern towards pain and sorrow of the other beings, by rejection of cruelty, fanatism, intolerance and indifference.
a vision of human being and his/her place in the global ecosystem that take into account his/her biological nature and his/her relationships with other species and the ecosystem as a whole, but without mortitying human attitude towards nature-shaping and self-shaping (thanks to science and technology and the evolution of customs), so this vision doesn’t regard “natural order” as sacred or source of morality.
an ethical and political worldview radically libertarian and egalitarian, that recognise the right of each and every individual, universally, to autonomy and in particular to the autonomous use and development of one’s reason, and so reject any kind of authoritarianism, hierarchism, justification of the dominion of a man on another man. So on this blog are welcomed kinds of anarchism of soc ialist or “liberalistic” (mutualist, american individualist9) tendency; contributions from others political philosophies are welcomed if they respect the strong libertarian and egalitarian10 nature of this blog.
To cultivate and valorize these visions, I’m going to:
Publish new (or old) essays and articles about issues that fit with this blog.
To rise questions to debate, and publish contributions (in case I receive some), to stimulate critical dialogue and the development of the thought expressed in this blog.
Translate short essays and articles from foreign languages into Italian/ translate short essays and articles that express Plural’s philosophy from Italian into foreign languanges.
Finally, know and establish friendship and collaboration relationships with people that share my point of view, or at least respect it, with the hope to set up spaces (virtual and real) more suitable and practical.
